7th PAP Remote Learning Plan

Hello Parents,

I hope you and your students are all still doing well. I miss them so much!

As I hope you know, your students will being starting what we are calling "Remote Learning" on Monday the 23rd. If you are wondering what this is going to look like, everything will be posted in my google classroom, at the beginning of each week. So your students will receive their first assignment on Monday, March 23rd and it will need to be completed by Monday, March 30th, before they receive their next assignment. All of your students should be in my google classroom, because this is something that they have used all year. If they are not, I have sent the class code in a previous email and it is also on my Edlio page, which you can find through the school website.

This first week we will be reviewing Composite Area, which is something we started before we left for Spring Break. I will be having virtual office hours that the students will be able to reach me at immediately, on Tuesday's and Thursday's from 10-11 am. And if you or your child have any questions about anything related to remote learning or just the Learning Focus of the week, please just let me know. I will answer any question to the best of my ability or I will find out the answer for you.

I know that some of the students do not have a calculator at home so Texas Instruments is giving a free 6 month subscription to their online calculator that can be downloaded on to your computer. I have attached the link below. Once you click on it is should take you to a page and you will need to select "software for students" and the one that we use is the TI-84. Your student will need to enter their school email address.

7th Grade PAP Math Update

Hello 7th Grade PAP Math Parents,

We finished up our Unit 6 yesterday over Transformations and Dilations.  Today, February 29th we will begin our Unit 7 which covers measurement.  Unit 7 is broken into 3 sections, and we will start out with section 7A.

Please help me out with encouraging the students to stay strong in their studies.  I am starting to see some students not giving 100% effort and it is affecting their grade.  Encourage them along with me to advocate for themselves when they do not understand a concept.  My tutoring days are Monday and Friday Morning at 7:15 am. They also have the option to come and see me for help during Paw Period.

Topics that we will cover for Unit 7A are the following:

  • ·         Similar figures
  • ·         Angle relationships (complementary angles/ supplementary angles/ adjacent angles/ vertical angles/ corresponding angles)
  • ·         The Pythagorean Theorem
  • ·         Projected CFA (checkpoint) date is Tuesday, February 18th
  • ·         Projected Test for 7A is Friday, February 21st

As always please let me know if you have questions/ concerns.

Thank you for your support in helping make your child successful!

8th Grade Math Update

Hello 8th Grade Math Parents,

We finished up Unit 7 Tuesday.  Wednesday, January 29th we will begin our Unit 8 covering transformations and dilations.

I encourage you to please have a discussion with your child about staying strong with their studies.  Our STAAR Test is approaching quickly for 8th grade on April 7th and they need to make sure that they are grasping all concepts.  This is an SSI year for the students, and they will need to be successful on their test in order to move on to high school.  I am starting to see some students not giving 100%.  Please also encourage them that if they do not understand a concept that they need to advocate for themselves.  My tutoring times are Monday and Friday morning's at 7:15am.  They can also use Paw Period to come and work with me.

Here are the topics we will cover:

  • Translations, reflections, rotations – Students will be able to describe the properties of orientation and congruence of each of these transformations.
  • Students will also be able to describe the effect of a translation, rotation, or reflection on coordinates using an algebraic representation.
  • Dilations – Students will describe the effects of a dilation on coordinates using an algebraic representation.  They should recognize that based on the scale factor being multiplied, the original image will either grow or shrink.  They will be able to connect that a whole number scale factor is an enlargement and a fraction will result in a reduction.

Next week February 4th and 5th, the students will be taking an Interim Assessment. It is an assessment that can help us gauge how the student may perform on the STAAR.

  • We have been talking about possibly assigning a Dilation's project but it is still being discussed.
  •  Wednesday, February 12th - Ms. Kelley's 8th Grade classes will attend the PGP Meeting - Parents are encouraged to attend
  • Projected CFA (checkpoint) – February 18th
  • Projected test date for Unit 8 Friday, February 21st(major grade)

As always please let me know if you have questions/ concerns.

Thank you for your support in helping make your child successful!

7th PAP Math Parent Email 1/13/2020

Hello 7th Grade PAP Math Parents,

I hope that everyone had an outstanding and blessed holiday!  The break was much needed, but I missed my students!

We have begun our Unit 6 which covers all 8th grade TEKS, Transformational Geometry.  This unit will cover translations, reflections (over the x and x-axis), rotations, and dilations.  The emphasis for this unit will be that the students learn the algebraic rule for all of these transformations.  Here are some of the essential questions that I want for them to know:

  1. How do you describe the properties of orientation and congruence of translations?
  2. How do you describe the properties of orientation and congruence of reflections?
  3. How do you describe the properties of orientation and congruence of rotations?
  4. How can you describe the effect of a translation, rotation, or reflection on coordinates using an algebraic representation?

As long as our CFA percentages look good we will aim to take our unit 6 test for this unit Friday, January 24th.

Happy New Year to all of you,

Renee Kelley

8th Grade Parent Email 1/13/2020

Hello 8th Grade Math Parents,

I hope that everyone had an outstanding and blessed holiday!  The break was much needed, but I missed my students! I am anxious to see all of them tomorrow and hear about their holiday.

We have begun our Unit 7 tomorrow covering the Pythagorean Theorem, distance, and angle relationships.  Here are some of the essential questions that I expect my students to answer as we go through the unit:

  • How can you prove the Pythagorean Theorem and use it to solve problems?
  • How can you test the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem and use it to solve problems?
  • How can you use the Pythagorean Theorem to find the distance between two points on a coordinate plane?
  • What can you conclude about the angles formed by parallel lines that are cut by a transversal?
  • How can you determine when two triangles are similar?

As long as our CFA percentages look good we will aim to test on Tuesday, January 28th.

Happy New Year to all of you,

Email 11/3/19

Hello Parents,

I wanted to let you all know that my tutoring times will be changing. With basketball season approaching, I will no longer be able to hold after school tutoring. My tutoring times will be changing to Monday and Friday before school. That will begin next week, Nov 11th. As for this week, the only day I will be able to tutor is Friday before school or during PAW.  I will still be available by email, any time.

Thank you for your understanding.

8th grade

Hello Parents,

I just wanted to let you know a few important dates. Your students have already started on the next Unit, which is over Equations and Inequalities. We had originally planned for the Unit 2 test to be on Friday the 20th, but have decided to push it back because we feel like the students need more time and practice. The date for the Unit 2 test is currently set for Tuesday, September 24th, pending the new CFA's we have implemented. I will let you know if anything changes.

The students have received homework for tonight, and I highly encourage you make sure that they do it. It is great practice and it can only make them better. I will be posting more practice on my google classroom by the end of the week, along with sending out a reminder when that happens.

I have posted weekly homework on my website, so that you are aware of what days your child will have homework and what to be looking for.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

7th PAP

Hello Parents,

I just wanted to let you know about what we are doing in PAP math for the second unit and inform you of some important dates. We are in full swing of Unit 2, which we started on Friday. Unit 2 is over Expressions, Equations and Inequalities. We will have a quiz coming up on Wednesday the 18th, over simplifying expressions. This is what we went over today in class, and the students received homework over it tonight, as well. There will be 2 major grades this unit. One is an Embedded Assessment which comes straight from our textbook, along with our Unit 2 test. The embedded assessment will be given on Tuesday, October 1st, and the Unit 2 test will be that following Friday on October the 4th.

I have posted homework for the week on my website so that you are aware of the days that your students has homework along with what it is called.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

CFA's

Parents,

I want to make you aware of some changes that we will be making in our CPJH Math Department.  Beginning with our next unit we will start giving the students what we refer to as a CFA (Common Formative Assessment).  The CFA will consist of four to five questions covering the students Readiness TEKS for the current unit they are in.  Our goal as a department is to have the grade level show a mastery of 80% plus before moving on to the next unit.  This quick assessment will aid our teachers in checking for understanding before the Unit Test, and help with improving our Masters Scores for the school.  Students not mastering the CFA with an 80% or above will be pulled for intervention to ensure mastery of the particular Readiness TEK or TEKS.

If you have any questions regarding this please feel free to email me.

Update 7th PAP

Hello Parents,

This week in 7th grade PAP, we have started getting a little more comfortable with the TI-84 Calculator. I wanted to keep y’all up to date with a few important dates and my remind 101. This afternoon, I will be posting some extra calculator practice for the students to do. It is not mandatory, but it is good practice along with being fun. Tomorrow we will start our first unit, which is over operations with real numbers. The students will have regular homework, which is posted on the board everyday, and I will use Remind and google classroom to remind them of these along with important dates. Their first quiz will be on Tuesday, September 10. And their Test over Unit 1 will be on the following Thursday, September 12.

If you would like to sign up for my Remind 101 please text

Update 8th grade

Hello Parents,

In 8th grade math we have already started our very first over real numbers. I wanted to keep y’all up to date with a few important dates along with my Remind 101. I also have a google classroom that the students have all signed up for in class. The students have an upcoming quiz this Thursday, August 29th, over Scientific Notation. The test for Unit 1 will be on Wednesday, September 4th.  We are really hitting hard on real numbers, as it is the basis of the rest of the units. If you have not already, I highly recommend getting your child the TI-84 calculator. It would be a great asset for them to have at home, and it will be used for a long time.

If you would like to sign up for my remind 101, please text

2nd period- @9g64e7 to 81010

5th Period- @dh96b2

I will be using this to remind you and your student about upcoming important dates.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you,
