First Semester Objectives

Beginner Orchestra:

 

By the end of the first semester students in the Beginner Orchestra should be able to:

  1. Hold their instrument correctly.
  2. Use proper posture while practicing, rehearsing, and performing.
  3. Use a proper bow hold when bowing on the student's instrument.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency when performing quarter, eighth, and half notes and rests.
  5. Develop and apply appropriate knowledge of pizzicato.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency with their left hand when performing in assigned positions.
  7. Understand and apply musical vocabulary terms as introduced.

Concert Orchestra:

By the end of the first semester students in the Beginner Orchestra should be able to:

  1. Continue to use excellent posture and position while practicing, rehearsing, and performing.
  2. Develop and demonstrate proficiency when performing quarter, eighth, half, whole, and sixteenth notes and rests as well as dotted rhythms.
  3. Use a proper bow hold when bowing on the student's instrument.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency when performing quarter, eighth, and half notes and rests.
  5. Develop and apply appropriate bowing technique.
  6. Demonstrate proficiency with their left hand when performing in assigned positions.
  7. Understand and apply musical vocabulary terms as introduced.

Philharmonic Orchestra:

By the end of the first semester students in the Philharmonic Orchestra should be able to:

  1. Continue to use excellent posture and position while practicing, rehearsing, and performing.
  2. Develop and demonstrate proficiency when performing quarter, eighth, half, whole, and sixteenth notes and rests as well as dotted rhythms.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency with their left hand when performing in assigned positions.
  4. Demonstrate and apply an appropriate knowledge of different parts of the bow.
  5. Understand and apply musical vocabulary terms as introduced.
  6. Begin to explore functional vibrato.
  7. Develop proficiency with sight reading.
  8. Develop proficiency with conducting.

 

 

Honor Orchestra:

By the end of the first semester students in the Honor Orchestra should be able to:

  1. Continue to use excellent posture and position while practicing, rehearsing, and performing.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency when performing quarter, eighth, half, whole, and sixteenth notes and rests as well as dotted rhythms.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency with their left hand when performing in assigned positions.
  4. Demonstrate and apply an appropriate knowledge of different parts of the bow.
  5. Understand and apply musical vocabulary terms as introduced.
  6. Work towards developing a functional vibrato.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency with sight reading.
  8. Develop proficiency with conducting.
